Yes

MS since 1997

I am a Catholic sister with MS - and there are many of us out there. I have been a member of the Daughters of St. Paul since 1967; I was diagnosed with RRMS in 1997. It was a Franciscan sister from Toledo, OH, who was my true guide in navigating the initial uncertainty of this disease (this initial phase lasted about four years.) MS is a total health issue: mind, heart, spirit, lifestyle.

I don't have a wondrous formula for dealing with MS; I take Betaseron three times a week; I started Jenny Craig last December and am nearing a 30 lb weight loss (do the math; you will see how long it took me to give in to the advertising Kirsty, Valerie and Queen Latifa and a niggling conscience.) I exercise on a Gazelle for about 25 minutes a day - but it is very hard because it hurts. I had to work up to this from 5-10 minutes. I hate exercise! (Shhh. Don't tell anyone!) I just keep going with the help of God, my community, family, and friends. One step at a time, one day at a time, one prayer at a time.

If you like movies, visit my AOL blog http://journals.aol.com/rosepacatte/MyMovies/. My blog also tells more about what I do. You can find my media literacy activities at www.PaulineCMS.org.

Blessings and prayers for all who have MS, may have MS, and love and serve those with MS.

Hi Rose,

I am so sorry I did not see your note sooner!

I am sending prayers for you and hope that things are going well. I am preparing to test for my "Orange Belt" this month in Combat Hapkido. This is such a wonderful outlet and an amazing challenge. I really try to push myself hard.

Congratulations on losing that weight! I had to have a total thyroidectomy in January 08 and this threw me into being hypothyroid. Very miserable and I gained about 30 lbs. Dieting or exercise don't really work when you are hypo -- but I am getting that under control and the pounds are slowly starting to drop. It can be discouraging ... But I soon remember that I am thankful for my ability to walk and enjoy life in a special way now. God has a wonderful way of reminding me about that. :

I feel blessed.

Take care and sending special prayers!

Hi Diana,
One of the Sisters came across your blog and told me about it... I am sorry to know you have MS, too. And good for you that you can do martial arts. I do mental martial arts. I'd hurt myself if I tried anything fancy. I can hardly make respond to doctor's orders when they try to test my reflexes and such! But I started Jenny Craig in December, down almost 30 lbs (almost). And this has helped a lot.
I hope you will be well~
Blessings and take care!!

Sr. Rose -- it's great to see you in the community. Spread the word. I do a Gazelle too (isn't that funny). I love the thing. I have also started martial arts recently at 42 - I do Combat Hapkido and am contemplating starting Tae Kwon Do. It makes exercising fun and challenging and helps my strength, flexibility and balance. It's good for the spirit and fosters that indomitable spirit that is one of the clear tenets of Tae Kwon Do.

Kiap! :)

Sending a prayer!!
